The fashion for painted furniture came from Italy and "invaded" the whole of Europe. In 18th century France, furniture was painted with figurative compositions - flowers, love scenes, landscapes, etc. that were fixed with varnish or thin waxes. In Italy the "Arte Povera" technique included relief collages.
