STEEL

Louis XVI Console made of steel, blue steel and engraved gilt bronze.

- The strength of steel, the alloy formed from iron and carbon is such that from the Middle Ages on it was used to make grids, coffers, chandeliers and mirrors. It was at the beginning of the 18th century that it began to be used for furniture - beds, chairs, bookcase ladders - and was much appreciated for its pure lines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bauhaus used it for interior decoration.

During the third quarter of the 18th century, locksmiths like Pierre Dumier mastered a technique that enabled blue steel furniture to be polished until it ressembled silver. It gave a very masculine style to beds, chairs, bookcase ladders, tables, a style that was also adopted by some soldiers during their military campaigns.
