- Wrought iron has been used for furnishings throughout the ages, particularly in Germany and Spain. In France it has been in vogue at various periods - for lights in the Middle Ages, andirons in the Regence period and interior grates in the 1900s and 1925.

- Cast iron is the very first product of the fusion of a mineral and is poured into moulds. In France, it has been used to make firebacks, andirons etc. since the 16th century.
