Totally unlike the preceding style, Art Déco came from currents opposed to Art Nouveau which were developing in the European capitals, in the arts schools and architects' workshops. Art Déco, consecrated in Paris with the Universal Exhibition of 1925, used precious metals. The architect, Louis süe and decorator André Mare launched prototypes. People talked of "modernism". On the fringe, Jacques Emile Ruhlmann, Rateau, Groult, Iribe retained the classical, technical perfection and certain lines of earlier styles. Eilen Gray, Jules Leleu, Pierre Legrain Rousseau created nex forms. Jean Dunand copperware manufacturer and lacquerer also used egg-shell an parchment. Lines were refined.

Furniture : sets for dining rooms and bedrooms, the living room was recognised. Individual items : chests, elbow-high articles, secrétaire, desls, dressing tables, low tables, pedestal tables, new pieces for the "wirless", deep chair.

Materials : oak, mahogany, rosewood, Macassar ebony, satin wood, burrs of elm, walnut, amboina and shagreen, polished steel, wrought iron, chrome metal, aluminium, lacquer, light-coloured leather, precious inlays of lapis lazuli.

Types of decoration : geometry of strong colours, and at the same time, baskets of fruits, bouquets of flowers, garlands of leaves often sculpted in relief. White and beige dominated.
